Health and Safety policy
Movers Balham Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that Movers Balham follows to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. It applies to all removal and related services we provide, including packing, loading, transport and delivery of goods.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
Movers Balham is committed to maintaining a safe working environment and to preventing injury, ill health and damage to property. We comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and continually review our practices to improve safety performance in all areas of our removals operations.
Health and safety is an integral part of our management process. We expect everyone who works for or with Movers Balham to take responsibility for safe working and to follow our policies and procedures at all times.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Movers Balham lies with senior management. Management is responsible for providing the resources, training and supervision necessary to implement this policy effectively and for ensuring that risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place and kept up to date.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy on site and in vehicles. They must ensure that staff follow safe working practices, use equipment correctly and report any hazards or incidents without delay.
All employees, subcontractors and temporary workers have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate fully with Movers Balham in meeting health and safety requirements, follow instructions and training, and report any concerns promptly.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before beginning any removals work, Movers Balham carries out appropriate risk assessments. These consider factors such as access to premises, stairs and lifts, parking and loading areas, weight and size of items, use of lifting equipment, traffic risks and the presence of vulnerable persons such as children or older people.
Where necessary, we agree safe access routes, loading points and working methods with the customer in advance. We may decline or postpone work if the conditions present unacceptable risk that cannot be adequately controlled.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a significant part of removals work. Movers Balham is committed to minimising the risk of manual handling injuries through effective training and suitable equipment.
All staff receive training on safe lifting techniques, team lifting, carrying awkward or heavy items, and the use of trolleys, skates and other handling aids. Wherever possible, we use mechanical or wheeled aids to reduce strain, and we plan lifts so that they are shared appropriately among team members.
Employees are instructed not to lift, carry or move any item that they believe is too heavy or unsafe, and to request additional support or equipment where necessary.
Use of Equipment and Vehicles
Movers Balham ensures that all vehicles, lifting aids and removal equipment are suitable for their intended use and are regularly inspected and maintained. Only authorised and trained personnel are permitted to operate vehicles and specialist equipment.
Drivers must follow all road safety regulations, drive responsibly and ensure that vehicles are loaded, secured and unloaded safely. Loads must be distributed evenly and secured with appropriate restraints to prevent movement during transit.
Equipment such as ramps, trolleys, straps and blankets must be checked before use and used only for their intended purpose. Any defective equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of use.
Working on Customer Premises
When operating in homes, offices or other premises, Movers Balham employees must show respect for the property and take steps to prevent accidents. This includes keeping walkways clear, managing trailing cables and equipment, and using protective coverings where appropriate to reduce the risk of slips and trips.
We aim to minimise disruption and noise and to maintain safe access routes for customers and other users of the building. Smoking, alcohol and illegal substances are strictly prohibited while on duty or on customer premises.
Personal Protective Equipment
Movers Balham provides suitable personal protective equipment where required by risk assessment, such as protective footwear, gloves, high visibility clothing or other items appropriate to the task.
Employees must use the provided equipment correctly, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged.
Training, Information and Supervision
We recognise that competent staff are essential to safe operations. Movers Balham provides initial and ongoing training in areas including manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness and emergency procedures.
Information about specific risks, site conditions and customer requirements is communicated to staff before work starts. Less experienced staff are supervised and supported by more experienced colleagues to ensure tasks are carried out safely.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported to management as soon as possible. Movers Balham records and investigates these incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
We use incident data to improve our procedures, update risk assessments and reinforce training where needed. We encourage a culture of open reporting without blame, so that potential issues can be addressed before they result in harm.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
Due to the physical nature of removals work, Movers Balham expects employees to be fit for their duties. Staff must not present themselves for work under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that may impair their ability to work safely unless cleared through appropriate channels.
We aim to support the wellbeing of our staff and encourage early reporting of any health conditions that may affect their ability to carry out tasks safely. Where possible, we will make reasonable adjustments to duties to support staff health and wellbeing.
Environmental and Public Safety
Our activities may affect members of the public and the surrounding environment. When operating in residential streets, commercial areas or shared access points, Movers Balham takes care to manage vehicle movements, loading activities and temporary obstructions to minimise risk.
Where necessary, we use cones, hazard signs or banksmen to guide vehicles and protect pedestrians. We make every effort to avoid blocking emergency exits, access routes or driveways and to complete loading and unloading as efficiently and safely as possible.
Monitoring and Review
Movers Balham regularly reviews this Health and Safety Policy to ensure it remains current, effective and aligned with relevant legislation and industry standards. Reviews take account of changes in our operations, new equipment, lessons learned from incidents and feedback from staff and customers.
This policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers who wish to understand how we manage health and safety in our removals services.
